Dr Juliane Kleiner is acting head of EFSA’s Risk Assessment and Scientific Assistance Department (RASA). The department organises and supports the work of the Scientific Committee on cross-cutting scientific issues and supports the scientific panels that carry out risk assessments on general health and safety priorities in areas such as biological hazards, chemical contaminants, plant health, and animal health and welfare. Its units also provide specialised support on data collection, emerging risks, exposure assessment and risk assessment methodologies.
Dr Kleiner has worked at EFSA since March 2004. She led the Nutrition Unit for five years from March 2008, during which time EFSA assessed more than 3,000 health claims, providing the scientific basis for the list of approved claims published by the European Commission in 2012. She was appointed head of Science Strategy and Coordination Department in May 2013, before becoming acting head of the Regulated Products Department (November 2014-August 2016). Most recently she served as EFSA’s Senior Science Coordinator.
Dr Kleiner has a PhD in human biology from the University of Marburg (Germany) and a master’s degree in nutritional sciences from the University of Giessen (Germany).
After working for a number of years at the University of Marburg, in 1996 she joined the European branch of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI Europe), where she worked for seven years as a senior scientist, responsible for the scientific management and support of the food safety programme. Before she joined EFSA she was working at the University of Münster (Germany), providing the secretariat to an international task force for the prevention of coronary heart disease.
