Mark your calendar for European Antibiotic Awareness Day (EAAD), on 18 November 2017.
The EAAD is an annual public health initiative to raise awareness of the threat to public health from antibiotic resistance and the importance of prudent use of antibiotics. The latest data confirms that across the European Union the number of people infected by resistant bacteria is increasing and that antibiotic resistance is a major threat to public health.
Prudent use of antibiotics can help stop resistant bacteria from developing and keep antibiotics effective for the use of future generations.
On the agenda
Speakers will include the EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis, and representatives from the European Commission, WHO Regional Office for Europe, the European Medicines Agency, ECDC and EFSA.
What is EFSA doing to keep antibiotics working?
Fighting Antimicrobial resistance is a priority for EFSA and in 2017 our scientists have delivered a substantial body of scientific work in cooperation with EMA and ECDC.
Milestones include scientific advice on how to reduce, replace and rethink the use of antimicrobials in animals and a recent scientific opinion on how to measure progress on reduction of antimicrobial resistance.
