EFSA/WHO International Conference with support of ILSI Europe on Risk Assessment of Compounds that are both Genotoxic and Carcinogenic

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the World Health Organisation (WHO) with the support of the International Life Sciences Institute (ILSI Europe) organised a Conference on 16-18 November 2005 to discuss various approaches relevant for the assessment of the potential risks of the presence in food of substances that are both genotoxic and carcinogenic.

The present Summary Report includes the report of the conference as published in Food and Chemical Toxicology 44: 1636-1650, 2006, the programme and speakers’ presentations as well as the opinion of the EFSA Scientific Committee on « a Harmonised approach for the risk assessment of substances which are both genotoxic and carcinogenic » adopted in October 2005.

We are very pleased with the lively and constructive contributions by all participants at the meeting. Special appreciation is expressed to the overall chairs and rapporteurs of the conference and to the chairs and rapporteurs of the working groups.

As a follow up to the conference the applicability of the Margin of Exposure approach for substances that are both genotoxic and carcinogenic is currently being explored with practical examples by an ILSI Europe expert group in collaboration with EFSA and WHO.
