Open scientific meetings to continue in 2014 after successful pilot phase
EFSA has confirmed that it will continue to hold open meetings of its Scientific Committee and Scientific Panels throughout 2014 following a successful pilot phase in 2012-2013. From next year, observers will have more opportunities to exchange views on the topics discussed at open plenary meetings. Interested individuals can now register for the open meeting of the Panel on Food Additives and Nutrient Sources Added to Food (ANS), which takes place at the beginning of February 2014.
Since March 2012 EFSA has welcomed more than 100 stakeholders and other interested parties to 18 meetings of its Scientific Committee and Scientific Panels. Open plenary meetings are part of the Authority’s ongoing commitment to openness and transparency, as laid down in its Policy on Independence and reinforced by the Transparency Initiative, which was launched at the beginning of 2013.
Based on experience gained during the pilot phase, EFSA has revised its Guidelines for Observers, which now give guests more opportunity to express their views on topics discussed, and to put additional questions to members of the Scientific Committee and the Scientific Panels at the end of open meetings. In addition, observers will be free to report on the proceedings of open meetings.
The first open plenary meeting to be held under the revised rules will be that of the ANS Panel on 4-6 February, at EFSA premises in Parma, Italy. Registration for observers is open until 20 January. The draft plenary agenda, the registration form and the revised Guidelines for Observers are available at the following page of the EFSA website:
