EFSA recognises that stakeholders want to better understand the risk assessment process. If advice and action in relation to food safety risks are to be trusted, it is crucial that the way these decisions are made can be scrutinised and understood. Therefore, the Authority has increased the number of opportunities for Observers to attend meetings of its Scientific Panels. The pilot project allowing Observers to attend meetings has been extended until the end of 2013.
Underpinning EFSA’s commitment to openness and transparency, this initiative aims to promote understanding of how scientific risk assessment works at EFSA and to provide an opportunity for interaction with EFSA and its scientific experts.
The following meetings are open to observers in the last quarter of 2013:
- Plenary meeting of the Panel on Animal Health and Welfare (AHAW) , 22-23 October 2013;
- Plenary meeting of the Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues (PPR) , 20-21 November 2013;
- Plenary meeting of the Biological Hazards Panel (BIOHAZ) , 4-5 December 2013.
The opportunity for interested parties to observe Panel meetings, to see how scientific opinions are developed and how various points of view are debated by experts will contribute to further build confidence in the risk assessment process.
Observers will have access to these meetings either in total or in part. Registrations will be gradually opened at the latest one month before the respective plenary meeting.
