World Health Day is celebrated on 7 April to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization in 1948. The theme for this year is hypertension, a major public health issue that contributes to the burden of heart disease, stroke and kidney failure and premature death and disability. EFSA’s nutrition experts provide scientific advice to support EU decision-makers in the field of nutrition: for instance, in areas such as the relation between sodium and high blood pressure (tolerable upper intake levels for sodium); dietary reference values; the development of food-based dietary guidelines; and nutrition and health claims. All of this work underpins efforts by public authorities to promote healthy diets and lifestyles and forms part of EFSA’s broader remit to help improve the safety of the food chain in Europe and so protect European consumers.
