EFSA scientific workshop on the revision of a guidance document on assessment of pesticide risks for birds and mammals
8 May 2007
On 8-11 May 2007, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) organised a scientific workshop on the revision of a key guidance document on the assessment of pesticide risks for birds and mammals. The ‘Use of Focal Species and Ecological Parameters in Risk Assessment Refinement’ workshop, held in Valencia, Spain, brought together over 50 participants including representatives of 22 European Union Member States, industry and academia. Many of the participants were risk assessors or risk managers with an in-depth knowledge of the Guidance Document which they use in their daily work. EFSA was able to update participants on the progress of work to date and discussions included methodologies for conducting first tier and refined risk assessments and demonstrations of available methods for collecting ecological parameter data.
The Guidance Document on Risk Assessment for Birds and Mammals was originally published by the European Commission in 2002. Member States use the document when carrying out risk assessments as do industry who apply for market authorisations in the context of Council Directive 91/414/EEC on the placing of plant protection products on the market. Since 2006 EFSA is responsible for providing and updating EU-level guidance on conducting risk assessments for pesticides . As a result EFSA’s Panel on Plant Protection Products and their Residues (PPR Panel is revising this guidance document. The revision is being carried out due to advances in knowledge of the scientific issues related to this subject.
EFSA regularly works with stakeholders to increase dialogue and transparency on key scientific issues within its remit. In 2006, an online public consultation was held to gather feedback from the public on the guidance document revision and several expert working groups were created to review the feedback received and to decide how this could be incorporated into the revised Guidance Document. EFSA intends to hold a second public consultation on a draft version of the updated Guidance Document by the end of 2007.
