EFSA info-session on applications for feed additives - Technical meeting with stakeholders 2019
Feed additives can only be authorised in the European market after their safety and efficacy have been assessed by EFSA. The procedures for evaluation and authorisation of feed additives are laid down in Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition and its implementing rules (Regulation (EC) No 429/2008).
The EFSA FEED Unit is holding a technical meeting with stakeholders on feed additive applications on 14–15 November 2019 in Parma, Italy. The meeting will provide the setting for an exchange of views on scientific issues related to the preparation and the risk assessment of applications for premarket authorisation of feed additives. The event will help enhance interactions with applicants and stakeholders and increase the understanding of EFSA’s work on regulated products.
Objectives of the meeting
The overall aim of this technical meeting is to discuss questions on the scientific evaluation of applications related to feed additives. This will cover mainly the recently updated FEEDAP guidance documents on characterisation of microbial products, consumer safety, safety for the environment and efficacy. In addition, participants will discuss the critical issues of the assessment of safety for users. To this end, the following documents will serve as the basis for the discussion:
- Guidance on the characterisation of microorganisms used as feed additives or as production organisms
- Guidance on the assessment of the efficacy of feed additives
- Guidance on the assessment of the safety of feed additives for the consumer
- Guidance on the assessment of the safety of feed additives for the environment
- Guidance on studies concerning the safety of use of the additive for users/workers
- Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 22 September 2003 on additives for use in animal nutrition
- Commission Regulation (EC) No 429/2008 of 25 April 2008 on detailed rules for the implementation of Regulation (EC) No 1831/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council as regards the preparation and the presentation of applications and the assessment and the authorisation of feed additives
Structure of the meeting
Following the opening plenary session where topics of general interest will be discussed, participants will break into three small groups on specific topics:
Break-out Group 1 | Technical insights on the assessment of microorganisms used in the food chain using whole genome sequence
Break-out Group 2 | How to make a meaningful assessment of user safety for feed additives?
Break-out Group 3 | Environmental risk assessment of feed additives
The outcome of the discussion groups will be presented and discussed in a final plenary session. EFSA will issue a short report collecting and summarising the discussions following the meeting which will be published together with the presentations.
Participants are requested to identify two preferences for the session they would like to attend. EFSA reserves the right to allocate participants to a break-out group according to availability and considering geographical balance and representativeness.
A Plenary Meeting of the FEEDAP Panel will take place on 12-14 November. An open session for observers will be held on 14 November from 9:00 to 13:00. Registrations to the open session will be available soon at the following page.
Who should attend?
Anyone interested in the scientific evaluation of feed additives such as applicants with experience, future applicants, representatives of industry associations, competent authorities of Member States, academia, public and private research institutes and non-governmental organisations.
Please note that participation is limited to 60 participants. EFSA reserves the right to limit the number of attendees per company/organisation and exclude late registrants in case more than 60 registrations are received.
The registration form can be found at:
Please note that registration may close once the maximum number of participants is reached or, at the latest, by October 13.
After closure of registration, potential participants will be informed whether or not they have been selected for participation.
The meeting will be held in Parma, Italy, on 14 November 2019, 14:00- 18:00 and on 15 November 2019, 9:00-13:00. Further details will be communicated to selected participants. English will be the language of the event; no translation will be provided.
