Revisiting the International Estimate of Short-Term Intake (IESTI) Joint EFSA/FAO/WHO Stakeholder Meeting and Scientific Workshop

Geneva, Switzerland
7 September 2015

The methodology for calculating the acute dietary exposure to pesticide residues in the context of MRL-setting was initially developed at two international meetings (WHO, 1997; FAO, 1999). Subsequently, the methodology was further developed by JMPR (FAO/WHO, 2009). The calculated exposure is called the International Estimate of Short-Term Intake (IESTI).
At several of its meetings, JMPR has indicated the need for a new international meeting to revisit the IESTI equations. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has agreed to organise such a meeting in collaboration with FAO and WHO, on 7-9 September 2015, back-to-back with JMPR 2015 in Geneva. The meeting will consist of a stakeholder meeting and a scientific workshop.

Stakeholder Meeting
To gain the broadest possible input for this project, a stakeholder meeting is organised before the scientific workshop to gather different points of views (civil society, institutional stakeholders, industry and academia) and to collect the views of the participants in the context of the revision of the IESTI equations.

Scientific Workshop
The main objectives of the scientific workshop are to evaluate the parameters within the IESTI equations as well as the equations themselves in order to propose ways to improve the methodology. As a result, differences in approach between JMPR and regional/national risk assessment authorities may be harmonised. The overall aim of the workshop is to prepare a joint EFSA/FAO/WHO Technical Report on a renewed IESTI equation that will serve as a basis for discussion by JMPR, national/regional food safety authorities, and ultimately decision-makers.

Structure of the meeting

Stakeholder meeting
The event will start on 7 September 2015 with a one-day stakeholder meeting. It will take place from 09:00 till 18:00 (registrations starting from 08.15). The points raised by stakeholders will be considered at the subsequent scientific workshop.

Scientific workshop
The scientific workshop will take place on 8 and 9 September 2015. On 8 September, the workshop will start at 09:00 and end at 18:00. On 9 September, it will take place from 09:00 till 16:00.

By end of June, participants to both the stakeholder meeting and the scientific workshop will receive a background document containing the issues to be discussed and first proposals for possible ways forward.
Participants will have the opportunity to provide feedback on the background document and to participate in the various discussions.
EFSA, FAO and WHO will issue a joint technical report summarising the discussions and making recommendations. The report will be published on this page, together with the presentations given.
