Summary

The Community Summary Report on Trends and Sources of Zoonoses, Zoonotic Agents, Antimicrobial resistance and Foodborne outbreaks in the European Union in 2005 was published on 14 December 2006. Zoonoses, meaning infectious diseases transmissible from animals to humans, affected over 380,000 EU citizens in 2005. Often the human form of the disease is acquired through contaminated food. According to the report, campylobacteriosis overtook salmonellosis as the most reported animal infection transmitted to humans in the EU. These bacteria were also commonly found in food and animals. The report includes information of 16 zoonoses, antimicrobial resistance in zoonotic agents as well as foodborne outbreaks. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) provided the data on human zoonoses cases and contributed in the analysis of human related data in the report.

The full report contains a summary and analysis of the results as well as the monitoring activities in the Member States. The level 3 tables include an overview of all information submitted by the Member States and 3 non-EU countries.
