Following a request from the European Commission, the Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies was asked to provide a scientific opinion on a list of health claims pursuant to Article 13 of Regulation 1924/2006. This opinion addresses the scientific substantiation of health claims in relation to Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert and maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight and long-term maintenance of normal blood glucose concentrations. The scientific substantiation is based on the information provided by the Member States in the consolidated list of Article 13 health claims and references that EFSA has received from Member States or directly from stakeholders.
The food constituent that is the subject of the health claims is Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert. The Panel considers that Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert has not been sufficiently characterised.
Maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight
The claimed effect is “weight management”. The Panel considers that maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight is beneficial to human health.
Four references were cited to substantiate the claimed effect of which one was a human study. The Panel notes that it is uncertain to which extent the modified guar gum used in this study relates to the food that is the subject of the health claim (i.e, Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert).
The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert and the maintenance or achievement of a normal body weight.
Long-term maintenance of normal blood glucose concentrations
The claimed effect is “blood glucose control”. Blood glucose control is interpreted as the maintenance and/or achievement of normal blood glucose concentrations in the long term. The Panel considers that long-term maintenance of normal blood glucose concentrations is beneficial to human health.
One reference was cited to substantiate the claimed effect. This reference was not accessible to the Panel, even after every reasonable effort was made to retrieve it. The Panel concludes that a cause and effect relationship has not been established between the consumption of Cyamopsis tetragonoloba (L.) Taubert and long-term maintenance of normal blood glucose concentrations.
