Request for data on brominated flame retardants levels in foodstuffs

Deadline
20 December 2010

Background

Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are anthropogenic chemicals that are added to a wide variety of consumer/commercial products in order to improve their fire resistance.

Concern has been raised because of the occurrence of several chemical compounds from the group of BFRs in the environment, including feed and food, and in human biota. This has led to bans on the production and use of certain formulations of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs).

The European Commission asked EFSA an advice on the relevant chemical compounds in the group of BFRs for monitoring in feed and food. The CONTAM Panel (EFSA-Q-2005-244) identified certain groups of compounds as the most important ones to be monitored. Following a EU-wide monitoring of these compounds organised as of October 2006, the European Commission has asked the European Food Safety Authority for a scientific opinion on the risks to human health (EFSA-Q-2009-00684) posed by BFRs in food.

Call for data

It is recommended to provide occurrence data on the following list of BFRs compounds:

  1. PBDEs: Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers
  2. PBBs: Polybrominated Biphenyls
  3. HBCD: total amount of Hexabromocyclododecane
  4. Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBP-A) and other phenols
  5. Emerging brominated flame retardants

Separate deadlines for data submission of BFRs groups of compounds have been established as follows:

  • closing date for the data submissions on PBDEs, PBBs is 26th February 2010.
  • closing date for the data submissions on HBCD is 2nd July 2010.
  • closing date for the data submissions on TBBP-A and other phenols and emerging BFRs is 20th December 2010.

For information on the submission of BFRs data, please refer to the DATEX How to submit data where you will find the supporting documents, the Instructions for BFRs and the Reporting format for BFRs.
